Our participants have demonstrated incredible efficiency in completing the Convery Press 2011 March Madness Bracket Competition. Though there are still two more rounds of play and the Championship game is more than a week away, we already have our winners. It is rather sad that not a single member of group could foresee the upsets and have even one of their bracket hopes left intact as we enter the Final Four. Maureen will be receiving her $25.00 Applebee’s gift card for her (comparatively) outstanding prognostication. I am upgrading 2nd place to a $20.00 Applebee’s Gift Card since mom will be in Florida until after the end of the St. William Lenten Fish Frys. For his third place finish, Brian L. will recieve a family-style pasta dinner.
Final Group Standings are as follows:
Rank Name Score
1 Maureen Convery 212
2 Audrey Convery 190
3 Brian Little 188
4 Judy Theiss 187

Maureen seems to know her basketball teams better than the rest of us as she has taken the lead in our bracket picking contest. If Michigan pulls off an upset of Duke tomorrow, she will put some distance between herself and everyone else (unless Scott’s favored SDSU can advance to the final four). By Sunday night we should see our destinies in this bracket competition much more clearly. Check out our Current Standings.

B Little is off to an early lead in the Convery Press March Madness bracket contest as he picked 14 out of Thursday’s 16 games correctly. I am impressed that he foresaw both the Gonzaga & Richmond upsets. None of us foresaw the Morehead State victory which Brian missed and all of us showed enough “North of the Mason-Dixon Line” loyalty and confidence in Tom Izzo to choose Michigan State to prevail over UCLA…everyone except for Scott and Maureen who correctly (if not unscrupulously) chose UCLA to win. Maureen’s ‘lack of faith’ has paid off as she sits alone in 2nd place while Gary T, Judy, and Ron Bretz are all tied for third with70 points.

Who doesn’t get caught up in March Madness?? I thought it might be fun to have a friendly “Bracket Challenge” and see how well we can pick the winners against our family and friends. The Convery Press will even put up a couple of restaurant gift cards for the top finishers to make the competition more interesting. I know that many of you will feel confident (probably rightly so) that you can out-pick me. I have already posted my bracket entry for everyone to see and talk about. My picking Michigan to go all the way may not appear completely rational to many of you, but besides ‘wishing’ that it may be so, I think that their steady progress through the latter part of the season puts them in a position to beat anyone. I am not crazy about having Duke for the third round and having UConn in the same bracket, nor will I naysay the choice of Ohio State as the tournament’s #1 seed, but this Michigan team can hang with anyone in the tournament and with enough will and continued effort and improvement I don’t think it unreasonable to choose to see this tournament with the Wolverines pushing into the sweet 16 and finally getting the win over OSU this season.

I wrote the following quick e-mail to Sen. Stabenow on August 25, 2009 after learning of her plan to travel to Alaska:
Dear Senator Stabenow:
It is beyond my comprehension why Sen. Mark Begich would host three other democratic senators and an independent on a “climate change” tour this weekend in Alaska. To say that I am disappointed in your choosing to attend this trip would be a gross understatement. If your stated position was that global warming does not exist, I might apprehend your need for convincing evidence that global warming might exist–but you are on record to the contrary. I can only reach several logical conclusions:
- You are blatantly deceitful and do not believe that global warming is or even may be real. If you did, you certainly would not waste your time and taxpayer money on a trip that will add many tons of CO2 emissions to an already struggling environment thereby compounding ‘global warming’.
- You believe that receding glaciers, drying wetlands, and forests damaged by invasive species which have been documented in reports and on film by government, academic, and independent studies are a vast conspiracy backed by Hollywood film-makers much like the bogus Apollo moon landing which we all know was filmed in Hawaii.
- You are an insufferable leach bleeding the hardworking taxpayers of the United States to death under the pretense of a cure as you head off on a boondoggle to Alaska.
I prefer to believe that the last of these is true. That would make you only incredibly unethical while either of the other choices would compound that offense with stupidity. Senator Begich is a fellow Democrat. I should hope that his testimony and a large body of scientific evidence would be enough proof of global warming (or its possibility) and of evidence of other environmental concerns to keep you from uselessly creating tons of greenhouse gases on a trip to the glacial shelf and from wasting time better spent forging policies which protect the environment.
STAY HOME!
